Yeshua: What the Name of Jesus Means
Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ), pronounced yeh-SHOO-ah, is the Hebrew form of the name Jesus. It is a shortened form of Yehoshua, usually rendered Joshua in English Bibles, and means “the Lord saves.” The name reached English through Greek and Latin.
It was a familiar Jewish name long before Christians spoke it in prayer. Matthew makes its meaning central to his account of Jesus’ birth. The angel tells Joseph:
“You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
