## The opening

For twenty-five hours, Israel goes quiet. Traffic all but disappears. The airport closes, television and radio stations go off the air, and children ride bicycles along highways usually packed with cars. Many people fast and dress in white. Synagogues that are half empty on an ordinary day struggle to seat everyone who comes.

This is *Yom Kippur*, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year and the last of the ten days that began with the ram's horn of *Rosh HaShanah*.
