## The opening

*Yeshua* (יֵשׁוּעַ), pronounced yeh-SHOO-ah, is the Hebrew form of the name Jesus. It is a shortened form of *Yehoshua*, usually rendered Joshua in English Bibles, and means “the Lord saves.” The name reached English through Greek and Latin.

It was a familiar Jewish name long before Christians spoke it in prayer. Matthew makes its meaning central to his account of Jesus’ birth. The angel tells Joseph:
