# Sukkot: Why Jesus Spoke of Living Water

## The opening

For one week every autumn, Jewish families eat their meals, and many of them sleep, in a hut with a roof of branches. Through the roof you can see the sky. The harvest is in, and the winter rains have not yet come.

The Torah calls this feast *Sukkot* (סֻכּוֹת), “booths,” and each hut is a *sukkah* (סֻכָּה). Israel was to live in booths for seven days, “that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt” (Leviticus 23:42-43). For those same seven days, the Torah commands joy.
