## The opening

One breath enters a hollow ram's horn. The note is raw, almost rough. It cuts through the synagogue and stops the room.

This is the sound at the center of *Rosh HaShanah*, the Jewish New Year. Around it are gentler signs: round loaves, apples dipped in honey, wishes for a good and sweet year. But the ram's horn—the *shofar* (שׁוֹפָר)—is not decoration or background music for a fresh start. It interrupts.
